In recognition of Fair Housing Month, Long Island Board of REALTORS®, Inc. (LIBOR) has announced it is reaffirming its ongoing commitment to ensuring fair and equal access to housing for all. Through partnerships, education, advocacy and public outreach, LIBOR stated it is actively working to support inclusive communities and uphold the principles of the Fair Housing Act.
“Fair housing is essential to maintaining the integrity of our profession, earning consumer trust, and supporting the long-term health of our communities,” said LIBOR CEO Doreen Spagnuolo. “Our mission is grounded in ethical practice, inclusivity, and strong consumer protections. We empower our members with tools and training to champion fair housing every day—from required continuing education and in-depth bias awareness programs to legal guidance and unwavering advocacy at every level of government.”
As part of this commitment, LIBOR noted it recently hosted a Fair Housing Conference in collaboration with the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP) and supported by the New York State Association of REALTORS® at the Heritage Club in Farmingdale. The event brought together more than 160 members for a morning of learning and meaningful dialogue focused on the importance of treating all clients equitably and ethically. The conference featured a comprehensive training session addressing fair housing laws and policy issues at the federal, state, and local levels—including civil rights protections and bias prevention strategies.
“Fair and equal access to housing is not just a law—it is a cornerstone of our profession and a fundamental right for every individual and family,” said LIBOR President Mark Donnelly, who addressed attendees at the conference. “As REALTORS®, we have both the privilege and the responsibility to uphold these principles. We play a powerful role in shaping communities, ensuring that every person, regardless of race, ethnicity, background, or circumstance, has an equal opportunity to find a place to call home.”
Additionally, LIBOR stated that its members recently met with Suffolk County Executive Edward Romaine to discuss key homeownership issues—including affordability, infrastructure, water quality, and fair housing. During the meeting, County Executive Romaine presented LIBOR with a proclamation recognizing its fair housing efforts, further underscoring the importance of continued collaboration between industry leaders and public officials.
Similarly, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Queens Borough President Donovan Richards also issued proclamations affirming their administrations’ commitment to advancing fair housing. LIBOR stated it is grateful to the county executives for their leadership and dedication to ensuring equitable housing opportunities for all residents.
LIBOR noted in a release that its commitment extends year-round through its “Home for All of Us” campaign, an ongoing initiative that reflects the organization’s strategic focus on advancing fair housing and community education. Through its website homeforallofus.org, LIBOR shares vital information to help professionals and consumers make informed, lawful, and equitable decisions about housing.
LIBOR’s Government Affairs Committee members also are continuing their year-long initiative to strengthen fair housing laws regarding the sale of co-ops in both Nassau County and New York City, the organization stated. In Suffolk, they submitted testimony to the County Legislature this month in support of housing initiatives for first responders.
“Fair housing isn’t just something we celebrate in April,” Spagnuolo said. “It’s something we live and practice every day.”
